The History Of Business Signs

Shop signage is an important part of advertising any modern business. This is a practice that goes way back, giving businesses a recognisable identity since ancient times. We thought it would be interesting to briefly explore how signs have evolved over time. Keep reading to discover more.

Ancient Shop Signage

It’s not clear when the first shop signage came about. In all likelihood, the history of signs goes way further back than what’s documented. However, the first signs that we know of existed in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Rome. In those days, the materials used would have been carved stones or terracotta. Symbols were associated with different businesses. For example, a bush would usually indicate a pub.

The English History Of Signs

Back in 1389, there was a law that stated all pubs needed to have signage. If they failed to do this, they would no longer be permitted to sell ale. The reason for this was that in those days, water wasn’t always safe to drink, thereby leaving ale as the most suitable and safe alternative. Ale inspectors needed to be able to easily identify pubs to ensure their beverages were of suitable quality.

Business sign board

As cities became larger and housed more competing businesses, shop signage became more and more popular. Many of these signs would have images on with no words, as most patrons would have been illiterate. This is why a lot of English pubs nowadays are called things like ‘The Black Horse’ – because the image on their sign back in ancient times would have been a black horse.

Shop Signage Today

Signs continue to be extremely popular, and are essential for businesses with shop fronts. Without proper signage, businesses can be difficult to find and become drowned out by competitors. As well as the visual appearance and design, lighting also needs to be considered. Illuminating business signs is a must nowadays, particularly in the darker months.
